Do you ever take stock and evaluate your skills ?
It is not something that I do very often, and as I have been self employed for the last eight years, I have no employer to do it..
But just recently I have been looking back at various things I have made, and I am pleased to see some sort of progression in what I do.
The above block is an example of what I mean, it was the September block for the Fresh and funky quilting bee . Crystal asked us to make a spiderweb block from this tutorial, the fabric parcel arrived weeks ago and has been under my sewing table ever since, it looked way to complicated to me !
But, when I actually sat down this morning and made a start, it was not half as bad as I thought, and I managed just fine... and although I felt out of my comfort zone, it did make me think "You know, I can do more than I think I can, and I am not that bad at what I do !"...
Well done and quite right! It does feel good to achieve something that seems daunting at first. I finished mine yesterday and was quite chuffed too! Juliex

ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this! I am so glad to know I was not the only one who just left it and left it thinking it was 'too complicated' . . . and also like yourself once I completed it I thought 'what was I worrying about'?
I am loving this bee for the very fact it is pushing me outside my comfort zones continuously and I'm achieving more than I thought I could.
Thank you xxx for starting the bee xxx

Yes you absolutely can Maria! I love what you have made and yes it does look tricky. Usually tricky just means you have to know how to go about it and then it's pretty straight forward. I bet you have discovered that there are plenty of secrets in sewing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun looking block! Love your flicker photostream! =)
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting looking back on one's skills and see how we've progressed. as you say, there's noone looking over us to assess and we can forget the journey and progress we have made. Your spiderweb block is looking fantastic and you should be immensely proud of reaching that skill level.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! The block looks terrific! I bet it will be easier to tackle the next complicated project, having this one under your belt.
ReplyDeleteYikes, that would scare the pants off me as well! Looks very complicated and yet you did it, you made a great quilt block! Awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's truly beautiful and you should be very proud of yourself for being brave enough to attempt something new.

I couldn't agree more - I too am self-employed and I do end up putting things under the table if I don't instantly 'get it'. Mind you, your block does look complicated, so well done!
ReplyDeleteOn the blogs it always looks as if everyone is really good at all these things. What they do not tell you is that the photo on the blog is the 10th attempt and the other 9 are in the bin! Practice makes perfect and your block looks perfect!
ReplyDeleteSpider web blocks is pretty complicated so well done you! It's great to feel proud of yourself
ReplyDeleteMaria, you have definitely mastered this block , it looks wonderful and love the bright colors.
